F7LN: Fredi Nyashia's 7 Loves..Nstruments of Nspiration

Soul-Filled Experiences…

soulmate

At least a year or so ago, I had the thought to bring together a group of single women to have a conversation to share their purpose, dreams, and various intricacies of where they are in their lives. This was partially inspired by my purchasing and viewing “Soul Mate”, among other books I’ve read and my own life experiences.

This weekend I finally held in my home a gathering (to kick off my own celebration of life as my birthday approaches) where various women shared openly and candidly their lifestyle, past, growth, challenges, hopes, dreams, desires, life lessons, and their overall experience in being single women.

It was a profoundly open, revealing, and truly uplifting experience.

We began by viewing “Soul Mate”, a gripping cinematic journey into the realities facing today’s successful, saved and single African American women. After viewing this deeply personal portrait which reveals the trials, and triumphs of some unforgettable women, we then quickly went into a dialogue about our own experiences in relationships, what we individually seek and desire, what societal challenges and expectations exist and their impact, as well as our personal and collective questions, challenges, and more. This led us into immensely personal sharing, which allowed us to reveal, discover, and face moments of insight.

There were quiet moments of those that individually reflected, as well as intense ones that challenged us all to see things that we may not have previously realized. There were instances that prompted us to question and face things we needed, and to even be reminded of things encouraging us to continue to find strength in the journey of our lives.

In an age of so much social networking, text messaging, creating representatives to show others and hiding our own shortcomings, painful experiences, pushed aside dreams, as well as being so busy, distracted, or even not knowing or being out-of-touch with who we truly are, many of us as humans don’t take time to simply be self-aware or share and allow others to connect with who we are.

Though I will not share the details of our conversations, I do want to share and encourage us all to engage in authentic and transparent dialogue that we as human beings can share a connectedness that allows us all to grow, look in the mirror, heal, offer compassion and understanding to one another. Even more importantly to recognize in doing so and sharing with others, we allow ourselves to be vehicles through which we encourage and empower others to do so and in that we are equally encouraged and uplifted.

I look forward to prompting more experiences like this where various individuals can come together and engage with one another, including much needed dialogues between men and women, discussions on how we view our each other, our community, our value, societal ills, expectations, where we seek to be and how to get there, and much more.

I believe that in continuing to create experiences of authenticity, openness, vulnerability & encouragement through sharing our innermost self, we can pour into each other, touch one another, and allow for nurturing spaces of growth for us all to become the powerful beings that we are meant to be.

Seek Possibility..Inspiration…Then BE It!

p&i
Words written in continuing to create and possess a vision of much more to come…

Are there times when you simply know that there is more..
More that you are meant to do, meant to set in motion, meant to be?
Do not allow uncertainty, discouragement, insecurity or simply not seeing what’s to come
to allow you to live or be less than who you are meant to be.
Stay determined to keep seeking, keep striving, keep praying, keep moving forward.
See possibility everywhere and in everything.
To continue to inspire to touch others, seek it within yourself.
See it around you..
In a child, in a friend, in the fact you opened your eyes to a new day.
For it is there, because God is there.
Allow that light to guide you, to carry you
to new places that you could never even imagine.
For each day, each moment you find it and allow it to uplift you,
the gift of you becomes simply BEING it as a gift to others.

In The Wilderness…Finding Moments of Clarity

inthewilderness2
My time away, my haitus..from F7LN posting, from social networks and the like has not been in vain. And yes, I’m back and have missed you and so appreciate those that have been reaching out and just checking up on me.

Every now and then, I take some time to simply be quiet, be still, reflect, listen to that inner voice, seek God and get present to life, purpose, and so much more. This time it has been what I have affectionately called a time ‘in the wilderness’.

Some of you may be able to relate, as life often may bring us to points of asking many questions and seeking various answers, and wondering what’s next, what life and the future holds. And sometimes we may not get those answers right away and we’re stuck still wondering and unsure.

Finding the answers and knowing is not always the end all to be all. We can find moments of clarity in acceptance and being at peace with the unknown. Like many, I like to have a plan, to have clear and certain goals, to know what 5 years, 10 years from now will look like (I mean aren’t most of us raised that way from birth, going to school, then college, then career, family, etc). As someone who has accomplished many of the things I’ve set out to do in life, one fundamental question that I’ve been used to knowing the answer to is…’what’s next?’ However, ‘in my wilderness’, the answer to that question has not been as clear as I’ve thought or would even like. With the various ideas, dreams, desires, potential projects and more all circulating in my thoughts, I’ve found that truly KNOWING the answer to that question seemingly alludes me, hence why I take time to be still, be silent, listen, and learn.

Yes, I said learn, because though we often focus on getting through a period in our lives, sometimes it’s more important to focus on what we are to learn, to grow, and what purpose this period is meant to serve while we are in it. It has been increasingly blessing me to rather than focus on the things that we seek in our life’s journey, how much more there is than we even imagine in looking at what transpires in us & to us in the course of the journey itself.

Just a lil something to bless you with as you continue in your own journey…Blessings.

Through The Years & I Thank YOU!

throughtheyears
Last month marked 10 years since I launched my first company, Innovatec Services, LLC and became an entrepreneur. Exactly 1 year today, I launched F7LN. And I couldn’t help but think about the plethora of experiences, accomplishments, and especially amazing things and people that have blessed my journey, even beyond what I’ve imagined. Life has been INCREDIBLE and just want to thank you all…family, friends, clients, supporters, colleagues, folks that have helped, encouraged, and simply remained with me along the way. LOVE.

Nickel & Dimed-14KT…Cha-Ching!

14kt-nickel-and-dimed
I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels this project should be labeled with the following:

WARNING: Playing this album will blow your mind…as well as your speakers!!

Out the gate, 14KT comes hard-hitting, raw and edgy with ‘Five To Ten’ not only in beat but in verse. Musically, as well as lyrically, you feel as though he has gotten a lot off his chest. Heck, after listening even I felt a sense of relief like some serious energy has been released. And I know many a producer, musician, artist can relate to the content that he spits about being, as the project is entitled, ‘nickel & dimed’. Since not as often displayed as when laying it down on projects with his Athletic Mic League crew, it’s exciting to hear him bring his lyrical talent to this project.

If you didn’t already know, 14KT has a flair for impeccably flippin’ the heck out of a 90s jam. He’s the King of it and rightly so, as you can hear on ‘Right So’.

Let the headnods continue into ‘Imonit!’. If you’ve followed 14KT’s music, you may have heard this one before but this is one of those joints you hear and fall in love with it all over again. This was probably one of the first beats of his I ever heard and was really glad it made this project as it is so fitting.

The words “experimental” or “ambient” may come to mind as the album eases into the sounds of ‘Streamin’ and ‘Rosey Posey’, however, 14KT continues to show us the depth and multi-dimensional aspects of his creativity. Known for some serious slammin beats, there is an additional musicality, mood stimulating sounds, and various elements of how he creates and mixes that are simply amazing, of which you continue to hear in the songs, ‘Your Future’ and ‘Tri-City (Pep Rally)’.

Definitely representing Michigan music…A2…the “D”…at its finest, though with ‘West Coast Errol Flynnin’, I couldn’t help but get a picture of Dr. Dre, west-coast scenic views, folks flossin’, rollin’ on gold-spinnin’ 22s and some serious head banging..lol.

And as you continue to play, let me just say, ‘Go There’….yeah, he really did! First of all, let’s just note the date, February 2, 2012. To watch the birth of, as many producers affectionately call a track or project, their baby is amazing. And if you have not had the pleasure of a 14KhopThursday, I say FB, tweet, email him to bring it back, because with that cut as a result, we need that on the regular! Even that day it was a trip, like really? Old McDonald? But in true fashion..only 14KT, right! If you were not there to see, check it out!

By the time you get to ‘Packin Heat (Acap Outta Acap)’, you have to do a serious pause. Did he just pack 3 different sounds/tempos (a slow acappella into a uptempo club beat into a midtempo rhythmic beat) all in one song, seamlessly??!!

The track, ‘Toris’ is reminiscent of his “A Friendly Game Of KT” release (December 2011), which is also a beautiful project that you would want to have.

Given the opportunity to ‘test drive’ some of the tracks from this release over the last month, ‘Lincoln Lux’ definitely sets the tone as a smooth and classy-styled track. You simply can’t put 14KT in a box by labeling his music as only “hip hop”, “r&b”, “urban”, or “underground”.

‘Crystal Figurines’ & ‘Slo Swerve’ are two tracks that pack that ‘dopeness’ that artists love (as 14KT eloquently puts it) so much that they’d grab it and you hear them rappin’ over it. So, it’s so perfect that he already has artists that he loves and respects (as so do many of us) blessing them with their own lyrics. ‘Crown (ft. Black Milk & Med)’ and ‘Slo Swerve (ft. Jamall Bufford & JMSN)’ couldn’t have been better choices to lay down their lyrical finesse on this project, along with features by Ozay Moore, Blu, Kokane, and Ab. (NOTE: to all other lyricists and artists..don’t even try it. No remaking, doing your own version, posting or selling. Cop it..ahem, BUY it, listen and learn…no #nickel&diming)

Overall, “Nickel & Dimed” is a phenomenal body of work that demonstrates 14KT’s in a league of his own…”a beautiful gift from the beautifully gifted”.

So make sure to get it via Itunes or on cd and vinyl.

A Brother & Sister’s Love

darrick-post
This week I couldn’t help but reflect on the fact that it’s been 7 years since I’ve seen my brother’s face. Yes, I still get teary-eyed at times when I think about how I miss him. I started to think about what it really means to be a ‘sister’ or a ‘brother’, what is unique to that sibling relationship.

As a result of being 10 years apart we weren’t extremely close, but there were those special connections & moments that only a brother and sister could share that still touch me: as a child, I always wanted to follow him & go where he was; times when we’d clash over the remote (him wanting to watch Kung Fu theater & me wanting to watch cartoons), him trying to get alone time in the basement with his high school honey as I constantly interrupted curiously trying to see what they were up to…lol, to even as adults realizing we had common feelings about family, wanting to protect each other, and being able to empathize with each other’s thoughts, struggles, growth and experiences.

Even in death, I still sense his presence at times, when: something goofy happens to me it’s like he laughs with me; situations that we both have dealt with there’s this comforting and understanding presence that feels a lot like an unspoken conversation where he can relate; and still other circumstances I experience there’s like this subtle brotherly spirit letting me know things will be alright.

This life has awaken me many things including acceptance, cherishing family always, seeing the lesson and meaning of things that are hard to let go of, being present to things of this life but more importantly beyond, and my brother’s life as well as his passing has played a large part in that. And for that and much more, I’m still very grateful for the blessing he has been & continues to be. Still missed and so loved, Happy Birthday Darrick.

Black Men, Black Boys…You Matter!!

hoodieproject

After the verdict over Trayvon Martin, like many I was enraged & hurt. After feeling that the verdict and our justice system, left the statement, particularly to many Black men & boys, that they aren’t important, I was inspired to fulfill on this idea. This summer I was blessed to work with a group of interns (teens and college students) of which 3 were young Black men. After discussing the idea, they took it on to produce this video. I’m proud to have been a part of this, however, more proud that Black men created it that it may touch many others…

Music Monday: For the Love of Artists

support
For Music Monday, I’m finally sharing a post I wrote a few months ago as homage to producer, artist, and dj, 14KT’s upcoming release tomorrow, “Nickel & Dimed” (8/27/2013), stay tuned for the review…

Lately as I’ve been recording more and getting in a creative flow with music, I decided to write this post with love to all the amazing artists I know, have worked with, and hold in high esteem.

The other day I was listening to artist, producer, multi-instrumentalist, Zo!, during a radio interview, where he spoke quite candidly about wearing many hats as an artists, as well as some of the challenges of independent artists. As someone who has managed independent artists, as well as interviewed and worked with a variety of emcees, producers, managers, promoters, djs, and the like, I could definitely relate to much of what he openly shared.

One of the things I’ve often spoke to is the concept of valuing the work of artists. I’ve seen the challenge of artists trying to get free beats or tracks from producers, promoters offering little to nothing for artists to do shows, fellow artists wanting to get into each other’s shows for free every rip, and much more. This never ceases to amaze me, because at the end of the day, everyone wants to be compensated for their own work, so why do they feel like others shouldn’t want or expect the same.

When I first got into business for myself, one of the first lessons I took to heart is that if someone truly has love for me, what I do, the best way to show that is in supporting what I do. Honestly, yes, many wanted “the hookup”, but I quickly took from early experiences that if someone truly respected and valued my work, they would be willing to compensate and support what I do. From that point, I embraced that for those I choose to work with, or whose work I truly love & respect; I WANT to support, to compensate them…I want them to succeed.

The challenge of artists’ work being minimized is not a new thing, especially if you’ve been in the business for a while. This has been one of the underlying issues that have plagued the music industry for years.

One of the first questions I ask, not just music artists, but anyone I want to work with (videographers, photographers, writers, visual artists, etc) is what is their fee? I want to know what it takes to work with them, the value they place on their skill, talent, or work. And even if I don’t have it in my budget, I keep that in mind as something to create a budget for, pay in installments, or some type of agreement to give them the value of their work.

Even with the financial struggles people may have today from individuals to corporations, labels to promoters, however, that shouldn’t allow for minimizing our own or each others’ work. It’s just as disrespectful when people manipulate others’ work and claim it as their own, give false impressions to use others’ names or to ride the success of someone else, or to come across as if you are doing someone a favor, such as promoting them or using their work for one’s own gain, especially having never even spoken to or asked that person.

I just felt like stating this so that folks could take away from it the idea of valuing the craft, the work, the money, the time, the heart that people pour into their music, videos, projects, that is often taken for granted, overlooked, and undermined.

To individuals that cop music for free online (or from other people), use others’ creative work with no dialogue with or contribution to the artist, and other similar acts, it really shows lack of respect, and undercuts the sustaining of peoples’ work, revenue, businesses and careers.

So let’s show true respect to our fam, friends, folks that we are fans of by buying their music, opening up a conversation, building relationships, even accepting ‘no’ if you are not able to work with them; ultimately supporting what they do…particularly so their success can give us more of what we love.

..And go ahead and cop “Nickel & Dimed” tomorrow on ITunes and on CD – 9/3/2013 or Vinyl – 9/10/2013. Trust me, you’re gonna want this!

Summer Spotlight..Go To Work!

nri
So, as you may have noticed, my posting on F7LN had significantly slowed down over the last 3 months (but will be back in the grove shortly). For those of you that may have been wondering what’s been up with me, I’ve been managing a summer employment program with 80 teen & young adult workers and a staff of 19, which has made for an intense but great summer.

I absolutely love working with kids, youth, and young adults, and having been in a position to operate a program that gives jobs to the next generation. So I wanted to spotlight the summer with this video, ‘Go To Work’ produced with 2 of my interns about the 2013 N.R.I. program summer experience of our 80 workers, 16 mentors, 18 work sites…

Trayvon..More Than A Moment, But The Beginning Of a Movement

trayvon
Like many people I imagine, the night I heard the verdict in the Zimmerman case, I cried myself to sleep. Hurt, enraged, somewhat in disbelief, (though an outcome I could foresee), and in prayer over all that transpired. It seemed like too much, in that moment, to take in. And yet, despite the pain of that night, I found comfort, healing and being powerfully moved in God’s house the next morning to where I can write from a place of clarity to share these words…

As in many things that I’ve learned, studied, and/or experienced, be it historically, culturally, politically, or consciously, there are tipping points. For example:

– Learning that many of the things that we are taught in school are either inaccurate or from a one-sided perspective that vilifies, diminishes, or completely annihilates another group or people.
– Seeing that our society is built on systems that encourage that there is more value placed on people gaining and keeping money and power than value placed on the basic necessities of life, personal freedom, and our children.
– Realizing that even with the sacrifices of our own ancestors to seek justice, create equality, having been the backbone of this nation, where we reside and haven given so much so that my generation and beyond can flourish, that there are many forces at war to combat the very things they sought to provide.

When these things are revealed, one can be brought to various stages…anger, frustration, hopelessness, helplessness, ambivalence, non-acceptance, complacency and as I sometimes say “stay plugged into the matrix”. Conversely, we can be moved to seek truth, challenge, educate, empower, build, mobilize, utilize what you know, what you’ve been given, and your purpose to transform where we are today and create new possibilities for tomorrow.

The death of Trayvon Martin and the subsequent trial and verdict speak volumes to this “revelation”. From the world’s reaction, you can see that this marks one of those potential tipping points. Not unlike the Nat Turner revolt, the death of Emmett Till, and the assassination of Dr. King or Malcolm X that served as incidents of pain that became moments of action. Yet, events like the beating of Rodney King beating, Newtown, or the death of Hadiya Pendleton, that are happening in our time, right now.

I often ask myself with specifically tragic events, especially those that may seem completely incomprehensible, “Why? Why is this happening? What is all this supposed to mean? What is the purpose behind this? What is God saying with this (specifically what may He be speaking to me)?”

I ask these questions, because I don’t feel that we are meant to sit in our anger and disbelief, nor are we meant to forget. Trayvon Martin’s life, as well as his death, in this way, has a specific God-given purpose and I refuse to see it in vain. Though I didn’t know him personally, his impact on us, our lives, especially on such a large scale, speaks so loudly that it is not meant to be a fleeting moment of rage or despair.

I wondered if George Zimmerman was found guilty, if many of us would have felt content, like everything is ok now and pleased that justice prevailed this time so it’s all good. And yet many of us would have continued on with our everyday lives as usual, be in the comfort of our homes and that would have been it.

I can’t help but think of the remarks of Jesse Jackson, Jr., barely a month after Trayvon’s death. “How do we go from a moment to a movement that creates fundamental change?…If it’s a moment, we go home. If it’s a movement, we go to war.”

Perhaps this is why the verdict was not what so many had hoped for…to become a call for us to act, to fight in some way in creating our own path towards justice, to continue building on the foundation that our ancestors began, to sow seeds into our future.

I shared with some colleagues an idea I had this weekend, especially after continuing to see that not just this verdict, but so many things in our society sends a message to our youth, specifically young Black boys that their lives are not significant. Many of the young boys I know, already don’t think they will live past the age of 18. Part of the reason why so many are so quick to fight, shoot or kill another is because they already don’t value their own life, much less someone else’s. It’s something that I’ve increasingly felt the need to combat within the mindset of our youth. I hope that in a short time, I will share this idea, this project as a manifestation of what I’ve felt led to do.

However, I just want to take this opportunity to encourage you. As you can read, I didn’t use this post as a commentary on many things that I could have shared about what I didn’t like with the trial. I didn’t even feel compelled to tell you to protest or use this as a dialogue about the trial, though I encourage those, as well. I’m mainly sharing this as a chance to seek within you, what purpose, what seeds have been planted in you as a result of Trayvon, something you feel led to do where this indeed does become more than a moment, but rather a movement.
